Maria is the co-founder and co-leader of Brasscals, SB’s one and only street brass band. She plays alto sax with Brasscals, writes and arranges some of the music, books the shows and does everything she can to keep the 20+-person band running well. Brasscals has played all over the 805, performed at festivals in Boston, Seattle and Austin and toured in France. She also plays guitar and bass in TMI, a rock trio that plays original songs, and she leads the Ladies’ Strumming Social Club, a weekly workshop and open music group for female musicians as well as nonbinary and trans musicians of all levels. Maria has been active with music education since 2001, where she taught guitar and coached bands at the first-ever Rock and Roll Camp for Girls in Portland, OR. Subsequently, she helped start two other rock camps for girls and women: the Willie Mae Rock Camp in NYC and the Münchner Rock Camp für Mädchen in Munich, Germany.
