History & Timeline

The story of Santa Barbara Center for Art, Science and Technology (SBCAST) began in 2009 when the building site was first located. After six years of architectural design and revisions, the plan was adopted by the city. During those six years of design and planning refinement, the SBCAST building site was host to a number of Santa Barbara community initiatives, including the Summer Solstice workshop, Lucidity Festival fabrication, theatrical performances and exhibitions.

SBCAST was constructed throughout 2015, when ground was first broken for a creative crucible where disciplines intersect and new ideas take shape. From the beginning, SBCAST was conceived as a living community where artists, scientists, technologists could gather and collaborate.

Over the years, SBCAST has become an incubator for creative exploration, educational support, public outreach, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Through partnerships with institutions such as the University of California, Santa Barbara, and through engagement with the broader Santa Barbara community, SBCAST has helped foster a culture where creativity and technology inform one another.

The SBCAST timeline highlights notable events throughout the years.
